Why hydration is important in the workplace

Why hydration is important in the workplace

The question of how best to improve productivity in the workplace demands rightful attention from businesses, big and small. No surprises there – a happy, healthy workforce can lead to a more successful business, so it’s easy to see why it’s important. But what exactly can be done to create a working environment that actively increases productivity?

It’s an area that attracts investment, both in terms of time and resources, but we’re still behind the curve compared to the pre-2008 productivity growth rate of two percent. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggests that the “productivity puzzle remains unsolved” [1] – but there are ways to improve productivity that are both simple and effective.

Many businesses try multiple ways of doing this, from upskilling employees to introducing flexible working, but the easiest way to boost productivity is actually by improving workplace wellbeing.

It’s statistically proven that when a workforce is properly hydrated, they are happier, healthier and more productive. So, upping productivity can be as simple as encouraging employees to drink more.

Why is hydration important?

Our brains are around 70 percent water, and our bodies around 50 to 70 percent water – so it’s clear to see why we need to stay hydrated – to maintain peak levels of functionality, it’s essential.

Not being adequately hydrated can be more detrimental than you might believe, in fact it can greatly influence the way we think and perform. Studies have shown that your hydration level can affect cognitive function, cause negative moods, fatigue and reduce alertness.

Shockingly, a mere one percent drop in hydration could lead to a 12 percent drop in productivity, and a three to four percent drop in hydration could lead to a drop of between 25 and 50 percent. So, the damage a poorly hydrated workforce could have on a business, is worrying to say the least.

On the positive side, drinking water not only keeps you hydrated but also helps to flush out toxins, so those who drink more frequently are more likely to maintain a strong immune system, able to fight viruses and bacteria, resulting in fewer sick days.

The facts are clear – hydration is important in the workplace. But what can be done to directly encourage employees to stay hydrated?

The simple solution

Making sure employees have access to drinking water facilities is a given – not to mention required by law – but what facilities can a business provide to keep staff hydrated and boost productivity?

A drinking water system that provides high-quality filtered chilled and boiling water will encourage employees to drink more and stay hydrated. Here at Zip Water UK we offer the widest range of drinking water systems and water options – providing staff with pure-tasting, filtered water that they won’t be able to resist.

A key factor discouraging employees to drink more is the taste of tap water. It can be less than appealing, with the presence of chlorine, dirt and other contaminants – but with Zip’s MicroPurity filtration technology, which is 25 times better than a standard water filter jug, employees will be safe in the knowledge they have access to refreshing, great tasting water and no longer need to waste money buying bottled water.

The HydroTap range provides flexibility, giving you a choice of your preferred combination of instant filtered boiling, chilled and sparkling water, alongside the option of unfiltered hot and cold water. No more waiting for the kettle to boil – hot drinks can be made instantly, allowing employees to focus on work and waste less time in the kitchen. Plus, it’s more energy efficient too.

As an added bonus, the HydroTap is simple and safe to use, with touch controls and boiling safety lock as standard. Making a cup of tea has never been so quick and easy.

Keeping your workforce in mind and providing a high-quality filtered water system, you can ensure employees are happy, healthy and hydrated, which will ultimately boost productivity. With a Zip HydroTap in place, you’re on track for your business to go on succeeding.
