How to keep healthy when working from home

How to keep healthy when working from home

As more and more people are waking up to the new reality of working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, many are wondering how they’re going to keep healthy while optimising their productivity.

Of course, there are many benefits to working from home – skipping the traffic jams, having a lay in and working in pyjamas – but there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye, especially when it comes to creating a positive working environment that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.

So, how can you ensure you remain in the best health while working from home? Follow the advice below!

Eat healthy and keep active

It can be hard to stay healthy when you’re out of the office, especially when it comes to the allure of the fridge, the absence of your walk to work and lack of people to socialise with. Unlike during work hours, you are free to eat whatever, whenever, but it’s more than likely you’re eating unhealthily and not exercising as a result.

So how can you stay healthy and keep snacking to a minimum?

  1. Plan your snacks and mealtimes
Though normal life is currently a bit abnormal, the best thing you can do is stick to your regular work schedule. This means snacking and eating at the same times you would normally, ensuring food is healthy and varied to achieve a balanced diet.

  2. Exercise on your lunch break
Daily exercise can help to improve productivity and reduce stress – two important factors for people working from home.

  3. Opt for fruit and vegetables
To maximise your immune system when snacking, remember to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables that are jam-packed with health benefits, such as carrots for vitamin A or strawberries for vitamin C.

Stay hydrated

When you’re out of normal routine, it can be easy to forget to drink water. But when you forget, you’re depriving yourself of a crucial necessity that helps your body to function – vital for boosting immunity, oxygen flow and regulating body temperature.

Remember to stay hydrated with these top tips:

  1. Keep a glass or bottle of water on your workstation
If you have a glass or reusable bottle in close reach, just as you would in the workplace, it can remind you to keep drinking at regular intervals throughout the day.

  2. Make water exciting
Make water more exciting by adding squash or fruit to flavour it. Looking for a more permanent solution? Check out our range of HydroTaps for the home!

  3. Use reminders
Whether it’s an alarm or app, reminders can be a helpful tool for prompting you to drink.

Maintain your mental wellbeing

A main factor in your body’s health is your mental wellbeing. It’s likely that many people are worried about the current coronavirus pandemic and the ways in which this might affect their lives. The best thing to do therefore is make sure you take care of your mind as well as your body by following some of our top wellbeing tips below:

  1. Spend time outside
If possible, get some fresh air on your lunch break or after work. Whether it’s to walk the dog, have a run or simply to stretch the legs, spending time outside can improve your mood, reduce feelings of stress and make you feel more relaxed.

  2. Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness doesn’t have to take hours – it could be as little as five minutes away from your desk a day. During those five minutes, take time to connect with your senses, switching off any distractions, and listen to your mental and emotional state.

  3. Speak to friends and co-workers
As an unprecedented time for us all, the likelihood is that everyone may struggle from time to time. Remember to check in with friends and co-workers daily, taking advantage of video and other communication technologies available.
